2025 beginning of a new phase.

More kids from underrepresented backgrounds playing in traditional tennis programmes.

This has been made possible by:

The Flint Family through Leeds Community Foundation
The Fund aims to address the education and learning gap for children from disadvantaged backgrounds in Leeds, as well as the disparity in physical activity and movement levels amongst young people from different backgrounds. It was great to have Louise, Kirsty and Hannah from The Flint family and Leeds Community Foundation come and see our programme in action.

Sport England’s Movement Fund
The Movement Fund provides crowdfunding pledges, grants and support to help projects that get more people active. Sport England have continued to support us in 2025 while we continue to learn.
Sir George Martin Trust

The Trust gives grants to charitable work in West Yorkshire. Thanks to Carla from SGMT for taking the time on several occasions to come and see us. Their advice and experience in supporting various organisations over the years has been invaluable to us.

Bradford the city of Culture 2025

Bradford UK City of Culture 2025 is a designation given to Bradford,

Bradford 2025 - Partnerships - University of Bradfordbetween 2025 and 2029 by the Department for Digital, Culture,Media and Sport (DCMS). Somewhat coincidental but following our successful feasibility study we are super excited to kick start our programme in Bradford, based at Heaton Tennis and Squash Club, a club established in 1927, a time when the Bradford community looked very different to what it is today. Google some pictures of the club from years gone by, they are amazing.  We are pleased to launch our programme at a club with such a long history. A club that is surrounded by some of the most deprived and yet culturally rich areas in Yorkshire. It’s just been so nice to get started in Bradford in its year as the UK city of culture. We love our neighbours in Bradford and it was fantastic to work with Matt who is much closer to his community in Bradford than we are in Leeds. It was great finding new ways of recruiting new to tennis families. We hope to learn: how Bradford is unique,  if what’s working in Leeds will work in Bradford and more importantly what doesn’t work.

We are grateful for Matt McTurk the Head Coach of the programme there. Our values and mission aligned. He is passionate about opening tennis up to kids from the Bradford community who face barriers to playing tennis. This is a club that offers an all year round programme which is key for one of our main objectives of  having kids playing tennis consistently.

Supporting Ukrainian Refugees

In our community activities we engaged a group we didn’t expect, Ukrainian Refugees. 15% of the current BBTA cohort, as things stand, are Ukrainian refugees. We have been able to place displaced children who have settled in various parts of Leeds. Some of these children are new to tennis, some already played tennis in their home country which has a rich tennis playing culture. These children suddenly had no access to sport in a foreign country let alone the means to do so. The programme has come at a time when they probably need the social, mental and physical benefits of playing sports like tennis the most. We hope tennis makes a positive impact as they rebuild their lives in Gods Own County 🙂

“Nikita, is enjoying tennis, its helping him with his English and to make new friends” – Olena a mother from Ukraine told us.

Board of Trustees Expansion

As the charity and our activities grow we need more diversity of thought and experience. With that in mind we are looking to expand our board of trustees. 60% of our cohort are girls  we would particularly like to hear from potential female trustees to join our board.

As a charity looking to break down barriers to and through tennis for disadvantaged children, we are interested in hearing from people with:

– A deep understanding of barriers that people from low socio economic and culturally backgrounds groups face in accessing sports and being active.

– Experience in charity governance and safeguarding

– Experience of running a tennis coaching programme, club etc

– Experience in fundraising, marketing

– Building Tech platforms.

If interested please email info@bbta.uk for a recruitment pack.

Thanks
